GLENCOE — Westbrook Christian won the Class 1A-2A, Section 2 golf championship for the second straight year Monday.
The Warriors crushed the competition in taking the title at Silver Lakes near Glencoe.
Westbrook carded a 308 and defeated runner-up Donoho by 21 storkes. Altamont’s 372 took third and Pleasant Valley was fourth with a 377. All four teams advanced to next week’s sub-state round, which will be at Arrowhead Country Club in Montgomery on May 6.
The Warriors’ victory this year was similar to that of 2013, when Westbrook won by 25 strokes over Altamont and Donoho was third followed by Pleasant Valley.
In taking the section title Monday, Westbrook Christian’s John Hilliard Catanzaro and Harrison Martin fired one-under par 71s to claim the low round in the sectional. Westbrook Christian coach Misti Fairchaild said there was no playoff between the two Warriors since the team had advanced to the sub-state round.
Parker Brown shot an 80 for Westbrook, while Matthew Williams had an 87 and Jonathan Nichols shot an 86. J.P. Pirania, playing as an individual for the Warriors, shot an 86.
One area golfer, Spring Garden’s Jay Prater, qualified for sub-state with an 81. Cedar Bluff’s Nicholas Sawyer, who finished with an 82, just missed qualifying to advance when he lost a two-hole playoff to Shades Mountain Christian’s Tanner Tabor.
