No. 3 Southside reaches final of area tournament

SOUTHSIDE — Class 5A, No. 3 Southside advanced to the final of the Area 13 tournament by defeating Boaz 4-0 and Etowah 4-2 in high school softball Tuesday.

The Panthers (33-12-1) got strong pitching performances from Claire Graves in both victories. She went all seven innings in each game.

In the win over the Pirates, Graves allowed four hits while striking out 13. In defeating the Blue Devils to get to the final, she fanned 10 while scattering four hits.

Savannah Elkins and Hunter Ashcraft led Southside with two hits against Boaz. Graves, Morgan Holloway and Paiden Kircus each had one hit.

Savannah Thomas paced the Panthers with three hits against Etowah. Holloway, Lindsey Beal and Brittany Williams chipped in one hit each.

Etowah topped Fort Payne 5-2 to reach the semifinals. In the losers’ bracket, the Wildcats shut out the Pirates 9-0.

Southside will face the winner of Thursday’s 3 p.m. game between the Blue Devils and Fort Payne at 5 p.m.
