Danny League Field will be rocking this weekend when the second round of the Class 5A Alabama High School Athletic Association baseball state playoffs begin.
No. 7 Etowah travels to fifth-ranked Southside after both teams advanced out of the first round. Southside swept Scottsboro on Friday, while the Blue Devils edged Arab 5-4 Monday in Game 3 of that series to advance.
The rivals played three times this season, with Southside winning two and eventually taking the 5A, Area 13 title.
Two other Etowah County teams advanced to the second round of the postseason.
Class 2A, No. 6 Westbrook Christian got a pair of shutout wins over Fyffe and will travel to top-ranked Section for the second round Friday. Westbrook Christian has eliminated the Lions two straight seasons in the playoffs.
Glencoe advanced to the second round of the 3A playoffs for the first time since 2009 with an 8-0 win over White Plains in Game 3 of their series Monday. The Yellow Jackets travel Friday to play Piedmont, who was the state’s runner-up a season ago.
As for the Southside vs. Etowah series, Etowah will come in with confidence knowing it beat Southside on its own turf March 21. The Blue Devils took a 5-4 win and looked to be headed to a sweep the next week when the series resumed. But Southside rallied for a 5-3 win in Game 2 and cruised to a 12-0 victory in the third game.
Also reaching the second round were Class 1A, No. 7 Cedar Bluff and Spring Garden, who will square off Friday at Cedar Bluff.
