Glencoe girls beat Sardis in county tourney

The Class 3A, No. 10 Glencoe girls basketball team defeated Sardis 45-37 in the Etowah County basketball tournament Monday afternoon at Gadsden State.
Glencoe started sloppy, as Sardis jumped out to a 7-0 lead. The Lions eventually led 13-7 by the end of the first quarter and led 17-11 by midway through the second. The Yellow Jackets eventually got things going with a 3-pointer from Laura Poovey and then tied the game at 18 on Maddie Osborn’s layup with 50 seconds left in the half. Glencoe took its first lead on a short shot by Brennan Ingram with 10 seconds remaining in the second quarter and the Yellow Jackets took a 20-18 lead into the locker room.
Sardis tied it at 20 on a layup by Katelyn Beasley, but Glencoe took command of the game with an 8-0 run over the next three minutes. Ingram’s layup capped the run at the three-minute mark with a fastbreak layup.
The Yellow Jackets took a 38-27 lead into the fourth on Sally Tinker’s long 3-pointer at the buzzer, but Sardis tried to come back in the final quarter. The Lions eventually pulled within 41-37 on Kacee Mashburn’s layup with 48 seconds remaining, but they got no closer.
Poovey led Glencoe with 20 points. Tinker had eight points, Hope Gaskin went for six points and Osborn added five points.
For Sardis, Mashburn had 10 points and Selena Tarvin added eight points. Krista Hubbard scored six points and both Beasley and Madison Wood added four points.
Glencoe advanced to play Southside at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the semifinals.
