Pee, Carr highlight ASWA All-State football team

Toby Pee’s shadow apparently looms much larger than his 6-foot, 180-pound frame would indicate.
“He’s been the name of Sardis football probably for three or four years,” said coach Gene Hill.
Pee now can add something else to his legacy with the Lions — two-time All-State running back.
The senior made the Alabama Sports Writers Association Class 4A All-State first team for the second straight year Tuesday after rushing for 1,829 yards and 31 touchdowns in 2012.
Pee, a member of The Gadsden Times’ Dirty Dozen in the preseason, was one of 33 players from the area to either earn first team honors or an honorable mention in their respective classes. Southside offensive lineman Tyler Carr was the only other Etowah County athlete to garner first team honors.
“He deserves what he gets because the kid’s worked,” Hill said of Pee. “He’s got a lot of God-given ability, but the kid’s also really worked. The thing that strikes me about Toby, everything he does is 100 percent. What people see on Friday nights is what we see every day.”
Pee was a threat anytime he touched the ball. He caught 46 passes for 595 yards and six touchdowns and also completed two touchdown passes. For his career, Pee rushed for 5,494 yards and 66 touchdowns, gained 1,381 yards receiving with 22 touchdowns and added five scores through the air.
With those type of numbers, it’s somewhat surprising he’s not getting a lot of recruiting attention.
“He is some, but not what I expected,” said Hill, who added Pee is getting looked at by Jacksonville State and Shorter College (Rome, Ga.). “I think he’s going to get an opportunity to play college football and get his education, which is the main thing. And I know that’s his No. 1 goal.”
Carr, a highly regarded 6-foot-5, 290-pound sophomore left tackle for Southside, was a dominant force in the trenches for the Panthers this season and likely could have made the Class 5A All-State team as either on offensive or defensive lineman. Though he still has two years of high school remaining, the preseason Dirty Dozen member is projected to play on the offensive line in college.
“First thing’s first: Tyler is very, very unselfish,” Southside coach Marty Smith said. “Tyler is willing to play anywhere we need him to play, whether it’s offense of defensive line.
“He is making the move full-time to offensive line (next season), and I’m very excited about that for him. That’s where he’s projected to play at the next level, and I’m anxious to see his growth and see his maturity with co-offensive line coaches Larry Rose and Don Steward.”
Though he can’t be officially offered a scholarship now, Carr is being heavily recruited by Alabama, Auburn, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech and Georgia.
“Tyler is a young man who’s going to stay in a driving radius from the house,” Smith said. “Family is a huge part of his life, and he wants to make sure his family has every opportunity to watch him play.
“The good thing about it, Tyler and his parents are already doing a lot of the ground work right now (and) really establishing that short list right now. They’re being proactive in his recruiting instead of reactive. It’s allowing him to see some things and make some hard decisions right now at a very young age.”
Two players from Piedmont — seniors Jamie Major and Exavyer Jackson — landed spots on the first team in 3A. It was the third selection to the All-State team for Major, a linebacker who in 2012 made 135 tackles and five sacks. Jackson, who his coach Steve Smith said was a “space eater” at the nose guard position, made 81 tackles — including 26 for a loss — and 11 sacks.
Class 1A Cedar Bluff and Collinsville also had two players each make the first team.
For Cedar Bluff, multi-spot standout DeAngelo Hardy earned a spot at tight end. The senior caught 26 passes for 829 yards and 13 touchdowns despite dealing with double-coverage every Friday night. Nick Combs, a senior defensive lineman, landed a spot on the team after recording 102 tackles — 20 for a loss — six sacks and three fumble recoveries in 2012.
Collinsville wide receiver Edgar Padilla was honored after making 42 catches for 767 yards and seven touchdowns in his senior season. He showed his versatility by making 62 tackles and an interception on defense. Also making it for the Panthers was kicker David Hernandez, who also made the All-State team in 2011.
Another kicker, Logan McPherson, made the 5A All-State first team. He went 8 of 10 with a long of 57 yards and made 52 PATs in 2012.
Cherokee County senior Zach Bedwell was a 4A first team selection after recording 49 tackles and two sacks from his senior defensive lineman spot.
Joining Major and Jackson on the 3A team was Geraldine’s Matt Bryson at offensive lineman.
In 2A, Fyffe’s Randy Blackwell made the cut as the offensive athlete. Blackwell, a senior, rushed for 1,269 yards and 22 touchdowns. He almost reached triple digits in tackles on defense, blocked two punts and had two interceptions.
Spring Garden’s Craig Jones landed a spot on the 1A team after the senior helped anchor an offensive line that paved the way for one of the top rushing offenses in the area.
Several Etowah County athletes earned honorable mentions, including Gadsden City (6A) defensive lineman Finesse Middleton. Also getting an honorable mention were Southside (5A) running back Dantley Coker, Etowah (5A) defensive back Jay Duckett, Sardis (4A) offensive lineman Blaine Pruitt and Glencoe (3A) punter Daniel Otwell.
Other players from the area landing honorable mentions were Fort Payne (5A) offensive lineman Brandon Heard and defensive lineman Derek Watkins, Boaz (5A) defensive lineman Terrell Woods, Geraldine (3A) running back Michael Davis, Piedmont (3A) wide receiver CJ Savage, kicker Dillon Terry, defensive back Laphonso Burroughs and defensive lineman Marquez Gamble, Sylvania (3A) defensive lineman Jordan Cushen, Fyffe (2A) linebacker Trent Thrash, Cedar Bluff (1A) quarterback Levi Mintz, offensive lineman Skylar Cagle and punter Curtis Abernathy, Spring Garden (1A) running back Forrest Livingston and Gaylesville (1A) defensive athlete John David Jennings.
