KIM CRAFT: Westbrook, Ford sweep online polls again

Fans voted Westbrook Christian and the Warriors’ senior quarterback as winners of The Gadsden Times’ online team and player of the week polls at gtpreps.com for the second-straight week.

Jonathan Ford won the player poll with 5,123 votes for his play during Week 7 of the high school football season, while Boaz’s Ryan Smith finished runner-up with 2,553 votes. Coosa Christian’s Austin Mills took third, while Sardis’ Toby Pee was fourth and Collinsville’s C.J. Jones was fifth.

Ford completed 18 of 25 passes, including 10 of 10 in the second half, for 277 yards and one touchdown to go with 52 yards and two touchdowns on the ground in helping Westbrook rally for a big 31-20 win over Sand Rock in a Class 2A, Region 7 game Friday. Smith turned in an impressive performance for the Pirates in a key 5A, Region 7 game for the Pirates. He returned an interception 55 yards for the go-ahead touchdown as Boaz rallied from a 13-0 halftime deficit and defeated Southside 27-13. Mills ran 24 times for 244 yards and a touchdown to lead Coosa to a 13-7 win over Shades Mountain Christian. It was the Conquerors’ first victory of the season. Pee had a hand in five touchdowns in Sardis’ 48-40 win over St. Clair County in 4A, Region 6 play. He rushed for 165 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries, caught six passes for 115 yards and a touchdown and threw for another score. Jones completed 11 of 17 passes for 237 yards and four touchdowns, including the game-winner, as Collinsville beat then-No. 10 Spring Garden 45-41 in a 1A, Region 7 matchup.

Westbrook won the team poll ahead of Boaz, Coosa, Etowah and Collinsville, respectively. Etowah improved to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in 5A, Region 7 with its 30-13 road win over Arab.

The online polls at gtpreps.com are strictly a fan vote, and the intent is that readers access them, whether viewing or voting, in the spirit of good sportsmanship.

To vote weekly in the Times’ online player and team polls, log on to www.gtpreps.com/polls. The polls will be posted before midnight Friday when possible or can be accessed early Saturday morning. Votes cast are not automatically updated and shown, but should be able to be viewed in totals 15 minutes after being made. Multiple votes by the same user are allowed every 12 hours. Voting closes at noon each Tuesday.
