Fans of two players who helped their teams get their first victory of the 2012 season battled to the wire in deciding the winner of The Gadsden Times’ online player of the week for efforts during Week 5 of the high school football season.
When the poll closed Tuesday at gtpreps.com, Hokes Bluff quarterback Brad Robertson finished ahead of Gaylesville running back John David Jennings by 12 votes to win the honor with 198 votes (40.2 percent) out of 493 cast.
Class 3A, No. 1 Piedmont blew away the competition with its fan vote at gtpreps.com in the team of the week voting. The Bulldogs claimed almost 73 percent of the vote after defeating 3A, then-No. 2 Leeds 7-0 on Thursday night.
Hokes Bluff finished second, while Fyffe, Collinsville and Boaz rounded out the voting.
It would be hard to argue anyone played with more heart than Robertson, who helped score all four of the Eagles’ touchdowns in a 27-24 overtime win over Etowah County rival Glencoe on Friday night. He passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more. The senior passed for the game-tying score with 22 seconds left in regulation and ran in the winning touchdown on the first play of Hokes Bluff’s overtime possession.
Jennings rushed 30 times for 340 yards and five touchdowns in the Trojans’ 40-13 win over Coosa Christian. The senior was the runner-up ahead of Sardis’ Toby Pee, Fyffe’s Trent Thrash and Cedar Bluff’s D’Shawn Fife, respectively, in player of the week voting.
Pee ran for 127 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries and also caught a pass for a touchdown in the Lions’ 36-21 win over Geraldine. Thrash rushed for 152 yards and two touchdowns in Class 2A, No. 3 Fyffe’s 33-19 win over 3A, then-No. 6 Walter Wellborn. Fife rushed for 244 yards and two scores during 1A, then-No. 7 Cedar Bluff’s a 62-0 win over Woodville.
The Times’ online and team polls are available for fans to vote each week at www.gtpreps.com/polls.
