Spring Garden sweeps area matches

SPRING GARDEN — Spring Garden swept a doubleheader against Gaylesville on Tuesday evening. 

Spring Garden claimed a 6-5 victory in the 10-inning opener, and won 5-2 in the nightcap.

Will Ivey picked up the win in the first game, allowing one run and three hits in relief of Grant Benefield. Benefield threw for seven innings, allowing eight hits and four runs. The Panthers were led by Ryan Messer and Will Westbrook who both were 3-5 at the plate. Will Penton, Alex Brooks and Benefield had two hits each. Jake Grogan and Josh Hale had a hit apiece in the win.

In the nightcap, Messer pitched all seven innings and got the win, allowing two runs off five hits while striking out eight.

Westbrook led the Panthers, going 3 for 4 at the plate. Messer, Penton, Grogan and Benefield had hits.

The Panthers will travel to Gaylesville on Thursday.
