The Albertville boys basketball team makes its second straight appearance at the Class 5A Northeast Regional tournament today.
The ninth-ranked Aggies (26-7) take on Ramsay (17-11) at 1:30 p.m. at Pete Mathews Coliseum on the campus of Jacksonville State University.
Albertville won the area tournament for the first time since 2007 and knocked off Fort Payne 52-40 Friday night in the sub-regional playoffs. Ramsay beat Woodlawn 70-65 in another sub-regional playoff game to advance.
The Aggies feature Riley Norris, a 6-foot-7 sophomore that should challenge Ramsay’s front line. Norris scored 11 points and pulled down nine boards in last season’s 32-31 loss to Woodlawn in the Northeast Regional tournament. He is averaging 18 points and 10 rebounds per game this season.
Nick Mezidor, Braxton Morris, Patrick NeSmith and Drew Norris also will be heavily counted on today against the Rams.
Stopping Ramsay guard Jamel Waters will be key for the Aggies, as Water scored 33 points in last week’s sub-regional win over Woodlawn. Brinston Story and Justin Ethridge also are capable scorers for the Rams.
Albertville and Ramsay have met one other time at the Northeast Regional, as the Aggies beat the Rams 93-73 in 1995.
